New Health & Safety Brochures Available Online

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is pleased to announce the availability of two new health and safety informational brochures and the revision of three existing documents to assist nurses in addressing occupational health and safety issues in their workplaces.

These brochures are available on the ANA's web site. Please note, these are PDF files and you will need Adobe Acrobat to open them.

New Brochures
Your Health and Safety Rights
(WP-HSR).
Nurses are entitled to a safe and healthy workplace. This new brochure highlights the primary occupational health and safety rights all nurses should be award of to ensure that employers are complying with OSHA regulations.

Preventing Back Injuries: Safe Patient Handling and Movement (WP-BI).
Back injuries are the most prominent muskuloskeletal disorder nurses suffer. This brochure outlines how facilities can institute a safe patient handling and movement program to protect both nurses and the patients they care for.

Updated Brochures
The following three publications replace existing ANA Workplace Information Series brochures on health and safety. Please remove the outdated brochures and replace them on your shelf with these new documents.

Preventing Workplace Violence (WP-WV)
(formerly Workplace Violence; Can you close the door on it?) Nearly half a million nurses report being a victim of violence at work every year. This brochure discusses specific factors and actions nurses and employers should consider to proactively prevent workplace violence.

Preventing Transmission of Tuberculosis (WP-TB)
(formerlyTB- a deadly disease makes a comeback) Exposure to TB continues to be a significant workplace hazard for healthcare workers. This updated brochure idetnifies the fundamental steps necessary for an effective TB prevention program.

Preventing Needlestick Injuries: Safe Needles Save Lives WP-SNSL
(formerly Safe Needles: Save Lives) Nurses are exposed to deadly bloodborne pathogens such as HBV, HCV, and HIV through needlestick and sharps injuries. This revised brochure details the main components of a needlestick prevention program including the evaluation and selection of safe devices.
