Continuing Nursing Education Approval Program

Background
The Indiana State Nurses Association has long been concerned about and involved in continuing education. Indiana was one of the first states in the nation to develop and implement a process to assure that continuing education activities in nursing meet high educational standards. A statewide plan for continuing education in nursing in Indiana was developed in 1972-73 through a grant from the US Public Health Service and implemented during 1973-76 through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The Indiana Statewide Program for Continuing Education in Nursing (ISPCEN) functioned cooperatively with the Indiana State Nurses Association. Effective January 1, 1977, ISPCEN officially became a part of the Indiana State Nurses Association. The ISNA continuing education approval program is driven by the requirements stipulated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation for organizations accredited to approve nursing continuing education. ISNA has been accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education since 1977. The ISNA approval system is administered through the ISNA Committee on Approval of Nursing Education (COA).

Committee on Approval
The Indiana State Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

ISNA has established the Committee on Approval (COA) whose members:

• Grant approval for providers to award contact hours for continuing nursing education activities that area planned, implemented, and evaluated by the provider.
• Work with volunteer reviewers to evaluate and approve individual continuing nursing education activities.

The ISNA Committee on Approval meets in the spring and the fall to review ISNA provider applications and to take care of other nursing continuing education matters. The members of the Committee on Approval are:

Fee Schedule
The following fee schedule has been approved by the ISNA Board of Directors effective January 1, 2008:

Individual Activity (Live/Face-to-Face/Prepackaged) Application submitted eight weeks in advance:

An additional fee of $100 will be charged if submitted 45 days to 55 days in advance. Applications submitted 30-44 days prior to the activity will be assessed an additional $250. (Applications submitted less than 30 days in advance will not be reviewed.)

Provider Application submitted 60 days before Committee on Approval meeting:
$1,200 (3-year approval)
Ineligible/Withdrawn: $250
An additional fee of $500 will be charged if submitted after the deadline.
