events > 2002 meeting of the members
Meeting of
the Members / On September 20, 2002, we were fortunate to have Kammie Monarch, RN, MS, JD, Director, Accreditation and Magnet Programs, American Nurses Credentialing Center to speak at the Magnet Recognition Program Workshop. In the morning session she shared the history and vision of the Magnet program. Through the day the core elements were shared and those in attendance had the opportunity to ask questions. It was clear by those in attendance that there are a number of institutions in Indiana interested in seeking magnet recognition. Why is magnet recognition so important? Magnet recognition identifies those institutions that not only meet the standard accrediting criteria (i.e. JCAHO, HFAP, ISDH) but also go beyond in other areas demonstrating excellence. The difference is that magnet facilities have a strong nursing influence throughout the organization and the accreditation process. Nurses are a part of the decision making team from beginning to end, from bottom to top, and they are essential to the magnet process. On Friday afternoon the group heard from a panel of experts from Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY, and from Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, who have recently completed the magnet process. The excitement they shared was contagious. Hearing their stories of how nurses participated in the development, implementation and evaluation of the magnet process was empowering. Nurses designing the programs for excellence in patient care – what could be more natural or logical? One strategy was clear — increasing open lines of communication across the organization. Nurses participating in the panel discussion also shared how this increase in communication pathways empowers nurses to do more. The Meeting of the Members was held on Saturday, September 21, at the Holiday Inn Select North (Indianapolis). The meeting began with a presentation on Bioterrorism and Disaster Preparedness by Kathy Weaver, RN, JD, Director of Policy for the Indiana State Department of Health, and Cheryl Peterson, MSN, RN, Senior Policy Fellow, International Trade, American Nurses Association. Kathy presented the statewide emphasis on bioterrorism and described the CDC grant received by Indiana and the education program that is being developed for nurses. Expect to see more in the ISNA Bulletin in the future about bioterrorism and disaster preparedness and what nursing’s role is in responding. Unfortunately, the tragic events of Friday, September 20 (tornados that swept through Martinsville, Greenwood and the east side of Indianapolis) made the meaning and reality of disaster preparedness all too real. The first item of business after the presentation was a resolution brought by the ISNA Board of Directors regarding Bioterrorism and Disaster Preparedness. The assembly unanimously supported the resolution. The members then focused their attention on ISNA’s Public Policy Platform and Position Statements. The Public Policy Platform is an important document for the Association as it helps to guide the Board of Directors in decision-making and is a method of communicating the Associations opinion/stand on various issues to those involved in the legislative process. The members worked and refined the document to reflect the current state of nursing in Indiana. This refining process was the major work of the members for this meeting. The member’s present reaffirmed, revised/updated, and removed positions and statements. The remainder of the day was spent hearing reports from various committees and structural units of ISNA. The ISNA Nurse-PAC shared their annual report and announced the date of the ISNA Legislative conference to be held February 12, 2003. The
LPN Task Force reported as directed by the 2001 Meeting of the Members. A
survey was published in the August/September/October ISNA Bulletin and many
responses were received from LPN’s across the state. Those responses were
reviewed by the taskforce and a recommendation was brought to the members.
The decision was made to assist LPN’s in Indiana to connect with the
National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses in an attempt to
re-establish an Indiana chapter. |
