January 27, 2007
It is just the end of the third full week and you will note that some
bills have already passed out of the first Chamber. Committee chairs are
working hard to get bills heard and out of committee. Crunch time will
come at the end of February as the major issues, i.e. budget, are debated
and acted on. February 27 is the last day for House bills to pass on third
reading in the House and February 28 is the last day for Senate bills to
pass on third reading. Then we start the process all over again.
SB 327 HPV Vaccination URGENT!
Senator Vi Simpson, D-Bloomington, second author of SB327 called me at
home on Thursday to ask that we rally support for this bill. Apparently
the opponents are marshalling their forces. This bill is scheduled to
be heard in committee on Wednesday, January 31, morning. It is
important that Senators have a stack of phone messages from constituents.
Please call your Senator at 317/232-9400 or 800/382-9467. Here is the
link to this bill.
Additional information on cervical cancer from the
Cancer Consortium has also been posted at the bottom of the
legislative update home
page.
The bill should pass easily out of the Senate Health and Provider Services
Committee as 8 of the 11 committee members (all women!) have signed onto
the bill.
SB 418 Advanced Degree Nursing Scholarships
This bill was assigned to the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee,
chaired by Sen. Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville. On Thursday when I talked with
Sen. Simpson, author of the bill, she was not sure if he had decided to
hear the bill in committee. We contacted several on Sen. Kenley’s
constituents and asked that they contact him and encourage him to give the
bill a committee hearing.
HB 1391 Certification of Surgical Technologists
This bill will be heard on Tuesday. AORN and Surgical Technologist
Association have agreed to most of the language in the bill on the
national level.

As in previous years, you can go to the
General
Assembly’s Web site. Once there you will find most committee
schedules. It seems that the agendas for the House Ways and Means
committee has a difficult time getting posted on the web. The meetings and
the House and Senate are Webcast so you can watch the proceedings. You can
also print off full copies of the proposed bills, email legislators, etc.
etc.
So tuned. We’ll see you February 20 and/or Feb 27, 2007.
