ISNA Member Joan Austin, DNS,
RN, FAAN to Receive the
2004 Distinguished Contribution to Nursing Science Award
The American Nurses Foundation Distinguished Contribution to Nursing Science
Award will be presented to ISNA member Joan Austin, Bloomington, on Sunday
June 27, 2004 in Minneapolis, MN during the ANA Convention. It is presented
biennially to recognize a registered nurse who has made significant
contributions to nursing research.
Joan K. Austin is a Distinguished Professor of Nursing at the Indiana
University School of Nursing in Indianapolis. Dr. Austin has been a faculty
member in the School of Nursing since 1981 and holds adjunct appointments in
the Department of Psychiatry, Indiana University School of Medicine, and in
the Department of Psychology, Purdue University School of Science. In
addition, Dr. Austin is the principal investigator for the Center for
Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness that is funded by the National
Institute of Nursing Research and based in the nursing research center at
Indiana University School of Nursing.
She is a member of the Institute of Medicine and presently a member of the
Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation and the Research
Commission of the International Bureau for Epilepsy. She is currently the
Second Vice-President of the American Epilepsy Society, and in 2005 she will
become the first nurse to serve as President of that organization.
Dr. Austin’s program of research focuses on mental health problems in
children with chronic illness and their families. She has been funded by the
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to study child
adaptation to epilepsy since 1986. Her current research focuses on
behavioral problems in children with first-recognized seizures. She also is
the principal investigator of a study funded by the National Institute of
Nursing Research that investigates mental health and academic achievement
outcomes in adolescents with chronic epilepsy.
