Former ISNA President Dies
Kathryn (Katie) Lawson George, ISNA president from 1975-1977, died on Wednesday, January 15. She was 81 years old. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, 5252 West 52nd Street (just east of Lafayette Road) in Indianapolis. Calling will begin one hour before the service. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Indiana Nurses Foundation in her memory.
 


Katie Lawson George

Katie was a graduate of the Union Hospital School of Nursing in Terre Haute. During her nursing career she held positions with Union Hospital and the medical offices of Dr. Noel McBride and Dr. John M. Palm. She retired in 1989 as the director of nursing at the Shady Creek Nursing Home in Greencastle.

During her tenure as ISNA president, the Indiana Nurses Foundation was incorporated in December 1976 and the ISNA Council of Adult and Child Nurse Practitioners was formed. Also, the Commission on Practice established the protocol for a peer review program for impaired nurses, which was a forerunner to ISNA’s Peer Review and Assistance Program for Registered Nurses.  During her presidency, ISNA also assumed responsibility for the activities of the Indiana Statewide Plan for Continuing Education in Nursing (ISPCEN).  She also served as a member of the ISNA Committee on Membership from 1998-2001.

Her first marriage was to George E. Lawson and he preceded her in death on October 13, 1995. She married Arthur George in 1997 and he survives. Other survivors include: Nancy Lawson, daughter; Major Jerry Lawson, son; Dennis Lawson, son; David George, stepson; Paul George, stepson; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
