INDIANAPOLIS – Today the Indiana State Nurses Association Nurse-PAC (Political Action Committee) became the fourth organization this week to announce its support of State Senator Vi Simpson for Governor.

“In her nearly 20 years in the Indiana State Senate, Vi Simpson has worked tirelessly to improve Indiana’s health care system,” said Ernest C. Klein, Jr., executive director for the Indiana State Nurses Association and treasurer for Indiana State Nurses Association (ISNA) Nurse-PAC. “She understands the issues our members face and has been there to help us time and time again. Her record, experience, and integrity are unmatched – and we proudly endorse her candidacy for Governor.”

Among Simpson’s many accomplishments, she has authored legislation establishing the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), outlawing "date rape" drugs, establishing a HMO Patients' "Bill of Rights", a mental health "parity" bill and she has fought for additional state funds for the CHOICE home health care program.

“We must make sure that Indiana’s health care system is healthy from top to bottom. That means that every citizen has access to the best care available and that it’s affordable,” said Simpson “That also means our health care professionals have the best tools, the best staff and the most updated skills they need to deliver the best care humanly possible. They deserve it – and we, as patients, deserve it.”

“I know that nurses are some of the hardest working and most underpaid professionals in our state, yet they are so critical to the care we each receive. As Governor I will continue my work to improve our health care system and to support our nurses, just as I have throughout my entire career,” added Simpson.

Endorsed earlier this year by the Indiana Chapter of National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care (INDONA) and the Indiana Chapter, National Association of Directors of Nursing, Simpson has a long record of accomplishment in the health care arena.

She has also received the National Child Health Advocate of the Year award from the American Academy of Pediatricians, the President’s Award from the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living, and the Distinguished Legislator Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The Mental Health Association, the Indiana Academy of Ophthalmology, Indiana Psychological Association and the Indiana Primary Health Care Association have all previously awarded Simpson their Legislator of the Year Awards.

“My campaign is about organizing everyday Hoosiers at the grassroots level to get involved. Whether it’s rank and file union members, or nurses across this state – everyone is welcomed on my team. As we continue to earn these endorsements, our team grows stronger and our message spreads even further. I’m excited, I’m energized and I am grateful for the nurses’ support. ”
