Economic and General Welfare of Nurses
ISNA is committed to the economic and general welfare of Indiana's nurses and has long supported the right of nurses to have a written employment contract. In 1995, ISNA signed a shared services agreement with the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) to provide support for nurses who request assistance and are willing to put in the hard work necessary to establish a unit.

One of the most vital ways in which ONA represents nurses is through its Economic and General Welfare Program. In its role as the professional union for nurses, ONA strives to provide members with a means of communication and collective action regarding conditions of their employment. ONA monitors trends affecting nurses' employment and serves as a source and clearinghouse of such information. In a very real sense, the collective bargaining efforts of ONA members have earned us the right to proclaim, "Representing Nurses Is Our Business."

The basic objectives of ONA's Economic and General Welfare Program are:

  • To help provide adequate nursing care to the public through achievement of reasonable and satisfactory employment conditions;
  • To protect and improve the economic and professional welfare of nurses; and
  • To provide nurses with a voice in their employment conditions and in the planning of the nursing services of which they are a part.

ONA also works on many activities that protect the public and raise the level of nursing practice:

  • Monitoring standards of practice, education and service
  • Providing educational programs
  • Encouraging nursing research
  • Speaking for nursing in current health care legislation

ONA employs labor relations specialists to help nurses with employer-employee relationship issues. ANA adopted a platform in 1946 to allow nurses to be involved in collective bargaining. ONA adopted a similar platform in 1956 and the first union contract was signed in 1966.
