New Study: The Working Hours
Of Hospital Staff Nurses And Patient Safety
Details
The Business Case for
Reducing Patient-to-Nursing Staff Ratios
and Eliminating Mandatory Overtime for Nurses
A report prepared for the Michigan
Nurses Association by Public Policy Associates indicates the financial
savings associated with higher patient-to-nurse staffing levels are more
than offset by the cost of nursing staff burnout and turnover, threats to
the quality of patient care, costs associated with longer patient hospital
stays, and the additional costs and liability of complications and adverse
events that may be prevented by fewer patients per nurse.
